The Red Winemaking Trial (RWT) redefined Barossa Shiraz with a contemporary, opulent, finely tuned style. Contrasting the well-established Grange, it focuses on aromatic qualities, varietal typicity, fine tannins, and plush texture from Barossa Valley Shiraz grapes. French oak maturation adds further distinction.

This release displays precision, concentration, and balance. The palate boasts powerful blue and red fruits, floral notes, and a hint of savoury green olive. Launched in 2000, RWT has evolved from its trial status, known as Bin 798, but remains a stark contrast to Grange.

While approachable upon release, RWT Bin 798 has the concentration to age for many years. The vintage experienced varied weather but yielded excellent shiraz with strong typicity. Aromatic notes span blue and red fruits, floral elements, subtle spice, cola, and more. The palate is opulent, showcasing crème brûlée, dark fruits, and layers of flavour. An epic expression of Barossa terroir through a Penfolds/French oak lens.
