Collection: Pale Ale

Ales are brewed at higher temperatures than lagers. They also are brewed using top fermentation yeasts. Pale ales first appeared on the scene in the early 17th century and were traditionally dark until the discovery of coke (a non-smoking form of coal that allowed maltsters to create pale malts). A wide range of beers come under the pale ale sub category, but in New Zealand pale ales are generally influenced by the American craft brewing movement using NZ hop varieties Sauvin and Motueka. Australian pale ales have mid level malts and locally sourced hops such as  Pride of Ringwood, The English styles are dominantly malt driven with slight hoppyness and creamy texture.
