South Africa has been making wine for over 350 years. Beginning first as a refreshment station for the Dutch East India Company and eventually evolving into a vibrant and diverse wine region. However, the transition from then to now wasn’t always easy or straightforward. There were several challenges and setbacks. When the Dutch East India Company arrived in South Africa, they planted vines. The wines they made were proficient, but quality improved substantially after the French Huguenots arrived. They brought their winemaking know-how to the region, and the burgeoning industry flourished.
South Africa is heavily influenced by the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Their cool sea breezes and coastal fog temper the warm Mediterranean climate. The Benguela current, which flows north from Antarctica up the west coast of Africa, also keeps the hot summer temperatures in check. Because of this, the majority of wine growing regions are along the coast where conditions are perfectly suited to grapevines. Wine regions so close to the sea often struggle with humidity and the fungal diseases that follow. Luckily, in South Africa the “Cape Doctor” blows through and freshen things up during the spring and summer months. This strong south-easterly wind helps keeps the vines cool, dry, and healthy.
Thanks to the Cape mountain ranges, there are countless peaks, slopes, and valleys throughout the region And as any geologist will tell you, South Africa has several different soil types, each with a pre-historic pedigree. Granite, shale, and Table Mountain sandstone are some of the most sought after by wine producers. Because of these unique features, South Africa is able to successfully produce a wide range of wines with flavour profiles not found anywhere else in the world.
