- Sémillon is a lesser-known grape variety that hides in plain sight.
- It’s often blended with Sauvignon Blanc and is used to make the famous sweet wines of Sauternes, in Bordeaux, France.
- It’s prized for its honeyed flavours and silky texture.
Native to France, Sémillon has been grown in the Bordeaux region for centuries.
It’s one of three white grape varieties commonly found in the region. It is seldom bottled on its own and is frequently blended with Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle.
The style of Sémillon depends on when the grapes are picked. If they’re picked early, the wine will be fresh and zesty. The longer the grape is on the vine, the less crisp the wine will be.
