The heel of Italy's boot! Key regions:

Puglia is one of the warmest regions in Italy and is bordered by the sea. Daunia and Murgia are warm and dry with rolling hills, while Salento is flat and cooled by ocean breezes.
Found across Puglia is Primitivo but is it Primitivo or Zinfandel or... Crljenak Kaštelanski? Zinfandel and Primitivo look the same and taste very similar, so understandably, there have been many questions about the relationship between the two. Are they identical twins separated at birth, siblings, or first cousins? Thanks to DNA testing, we now know that they are clones of the Croation variety Crljenak Kaštelanski, which hails from the Dalmatian coast. Despite their genetic similarities, there are subtle differences between the two varieties much like how identical twins don’t always look or act exactly the same all the time. Primitivo tends to ripen early, be lighter in body, and have more savoury notes than California Zinfandels. Salento produces some of the best examples.
