Whether it’s white, red, rosé, or sparkling wine, there’s always something to explore in the Loire Valley. What’s one better, the wines are also going to be an excellent value!
All regions in the Loire Valley run along the, long, gently winding Loire River. However, that’s the only thing connecting the regions together. They all have different soil-types, climates, grape varieties, and wine styles.
Wine regions on the west coast are bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and experience a more maritime climate. They tend to make crisp white wines that pair beautifully with seafood.
The Atlantic’s influence lessens as you follow the Loire River and head further inland. The regions in the interior are far more continental. The regions of Anjou, Saumur, and Touraine are a bit warmer and prefect for red and richer white wines.
The Centre-Loire region on the Loire Valley’s eastern boundary is far cooler and has more in common with the neighbouring region of Chablis. Consequently, you’ll find crisp whites and lighter reds here.
There are a vast number of different soil types within the Loire Valley. Flint, tuffeau limestone, and granite are just a few of what you’ll find throughout the region. This along with its large number of unique micro-climates makes it difficult to define a “Loire Valley Wine Style.” However, Loire Valley wines tend to all be approachable, food-friendly, and excellent values.
