Grapes are grown in every corner of the country, and Italy has roughly 1.7 million acres under vine. 377 grape varieties are planted across the country and are crafted into a wide range of wine styles. This is one of the many reasons it is easy to travel through Italy with nothing but a glass!
Wine has always been produced here, but in the 1960s Italy adopted regional wine regulations. These regulations stipulated which grapes could be planted where and how they were grown, harvested, and turned into wine. Unsurprisingly, they did not initially go over particularly well. The new rules were criticised as being too restrictive and for preferring traditional winemaking practices over innovative approaches.
