Bacardi Rum - White Rum
Since its founding in 1862 in Cuba by Facundo Bacardi, the family has remained to own and control the company to this day, spanning over seven generations, making it the largest family-owned spirits company in the world. Currently, its main headquarters is located in Hamilton, Bermuda, and its chairman of the board is the original founderās great-great grandson, also named Facundo.Ā
About the Bacardi company
Bacardi has over 29 manufacturing sites located in different parts of the world like Mexico and Scotland, with its largest production facility located in CataƱo, Puerto Rico. Not only is it Barcadiās largest distillery, but it is considered the largest premium rum distillery in the world. The company has over 6,000 employees across 160 different countries. From the supermarkets in Vietnam to the high-class restaurants of NYC, Bacardi brands can be found in more than 170 countries across the globe making it one of the most accessible brands available in the market.
The history behind Bacardi White Rum.
Bacardiās history is heavily tied with and influenced Cubaās history. After migrating to Cuba from Spain in 1814, Facundo Bacardi transformed a relatively raw, thus inexpensive, local rum into a mellower type of spirit. He trained as a cognac distiller and he used those techniques when he distilled the first Bacardi rum. Don Facundo constantly experimented with distillation techniques. From these experiments came several key innovations for Bacardi and the spirits industry.
Carefully selected oak barrels.
At that time, ageing spirits was more about what barrels were available rather than what was best for most spirits. However, Don FacundoĀ spent a great deal of time experimenting and analysing the results of the interaction of wood with liquor. It was through his home testing that he discovered that ageing rum in American oak barrels could produce the best results, ultimately creating one of the best-aged rum in the world.
WhyĀ are white oak barrels best?
They intensify the flavour of the Bacardi white rum and speed up the ageing process. The chemistry of the oak wood allowed the flavors of the spirit to intensify due to the porous nature of the wood. It allowed an exchange of oxygen into the barrel and some evaporation of the alcohol.
Achieve maximum clarity with charcoal filtration.
By ageing the rum between one to two years in carefully selected oak barrels, the rums are blended and passed through a second charcoal filtration, Facundo could achieve maximum clarity and create a more refined variety of rum, resulting in the worldās first clear, or āwhiteā rum.Ā
Bacardi Family Roots
Facundo started selling these rums in 1862 and as sales began to grow, so did the company. After its introduction, the Bacardi white rum took the alcohol world by storm, and by the 1900s, the company has endured a lot of turbulence in the business. Despite facing problems left and right, the company thrived, opening more production locations. It even constructed and opened a distillery location that has been regarded as one of the finest Art Deco buildings in Latin America.
As a new generation of Bacardis enter and run the business, the company also in turn ventured outside rum production, expanding to the beer category by introducing Malta Hatuey, their own take on the famous Cuban malt beer.
A New Age of Bacardi
But alas, trouble finds paradise with the start of the Cuban Revolution. The Bacardi family, and hence the company, was forced to leave the country in exile. As the country transitioned into communism, all private properties, bank accounts, and assets were banned in the island country. The newly formed Cuban government confiscated all assets of the Bacardi company without compensation, prompting them to relocate all their businesses to the nearby Bahamas. In 1965, as the company had started to regain its footing and lost resources, it permanently moved its headquarters to Bermuda, where it continues to be based to this day.
The Product
Bacardi is best known for its superior white rum. It is one of the most affordable rums available being made from fresh sugar cane juice, which makes it a staple for mixing cocktails and even for drinking neat. It offers a pleasant and inoffensive base for popular spiced rum-based cocktails like the Cuban Libre and Daiquiri. Itās also great as a substitute for vodka or for when you want a more flavourful aftertaste in your cocktails.
The First Impression
When poured, the Bacardi Superior White Rum is crystal clear. We have their double filtration process to thank for that. Youāll get a sniff of that very distinct tropical aroma that Bacardi is known for. Like a tropical fruit salad composed of coconut, melon, and pineapple mixed and tossed along with just a hint of vanilla and lemon. A strong alcohol after smell would then take over, after all, it is 80 proof (40% ABV).
Taste and Flavor
Upon tasting, Bacardi is surprisingly sweet on the palate, almost tasting like a mix of apple and banana. Some might even get a hint of sweet pear depending on the drinker. For something so sweet, it has a bit of a harsh finish. This becomes a perfect balance of subtle and delicate which doesnāt dominate, nor does it intend to. But it doesnāt disappear either. No matter what kind of cocktail mix youāre drinking, youāll know when Bacardi was used. The spiced rum flavour is more muted but it's present all the same.
Perfect for Mixed Drinks
Even better, it performs perfectly as a fantastic mixer. It can be added to almost any drink or cocktail and rest assured, it will always taste delicious. Its fruity flavours are vague enough that make it a versatile ingredient for making complex cocktails. The flavours become even more pronounced when mixing it with complimentary juices and other cocktail mixes. It has enough character to noticeably change your drink taste without it being overpowering. It relies mainly on its pleasant sweetness, thus regarding Bacardi as a mixer cocktail cannot be overstated.
There are several types of flavoured rums and cocktail recipes that you can try with Bacardi From the popular Mojito to Rum Mule, Cuba Libre, Hurrican, even just with a slice of lime and some cola.
