Bodegas Valdemar, a renowned winery with a rich history spanning over 130 years and five generations, is not only committed to producing high-quality wines but also to preserving the environment and promoting social development. The Valdemar family's passion for winemaking began with a humble 10-hectare vineyard in Rioja Alavesa. Today, their vineyards span over 300 hectares across the three sub-zones of the D.O. Ca. Rioja, each contributing to the unique character of their wines. The family's dedication to showcasing the diversity of their vineyards is evident in each bottle they produce.
Innovation is a cornerstone of the Valdemar family's winemaking philosophy. They were pioneers in promoting the Viura variety in Rioja and were the first to recover the Graciano and Maturana grape varieties. They were also the first to create a barrel-fermented white wine and the first European winery to implement temperature control, further enhancing the quality of their wines.
The Valdemar family's commitment to the environment is embodied in their Sustainability 360º project. This initiative aims to protect the planet, slow climate change, and boost social development without putting life on Earth at risk. They have been awarded the BRC Food Safety Certificate since 2018, ensuring the legality, safety, and quality of all their products. In 2022, they were awarded the Wineries for Climate Protection seal, the first and unique specific certification for the wine sector in terms of environmental sustainability.
In addition to their environmental commitments, Bodegas Valdemar is also dedicated to promoting accessibility and inclusion. They have entered into several agreements with different associations to promote labor inclusion for disabled people, making Valdemar Family a winery open to everyone.
The wines of Bodegas Valdemar are a testament to the family's belief that a special wine should be born from a unique land. This philosophy was embodied by Jesús MartÃnez Bujanda, the third generation of the Valdemar family, who purchased a piece of land full of stone rocks in 1982. Despite the challenges of farming on this terrain, he believed it would lend his wines a distinctive character. His son took on the challenge of planting the vineyard, a task that took two years to complete. This plot was later extended to become Finca del Marquesado, now known for its 134 hectares of vineyards out of 187 hectares of land.
