Merlot, a grape that's popular both by itself and in blends. When blended, Merlot boasts cherry, plum, blackberry and other dark fruits alongside vanilla and chocolate notes in a supple body void of big, bold tannins.
Easy going and approachable with medium body, medium tannins and medium acidity nothing comes jumping out at you but the overall profile is rounded and mellow.
Sip your way through the many styles of Merlot with this mix of single varietal and blends from across the world.
Château Monsan Estebe Bordeaux Superieur 2018 (Bordeaux, France) It’s filled to the brim with ripe, dark fruits with a thread of vanilla and oak weaving through on the palate. Its full bodied and would pair well with a rib roast, mushroom ragu or a platter of hard chesses. Drink this one now, it won’t disappoint.
Hinemoa Moana Malbec Merlot 2016 (Omaha, NZ) This blend of two classic French varieties is great example of this. Filled to the brim with ripe plums, strawberries and a savoury spice, it’s soft and well structured – we think drinking perfectly well now. Hinemoa Estate is well known for producing wines that go great with food and this is no exception. Try it with a fillet steak or a sharp, hard cheese for a perfect pairing.
Belles Du Sud Merlot 2019 (Languedoc, France) Grown on high terraces along the coast, the grapes benefit from the cool breezes and elevation, which helps them maintain their fresh fruit character. Notes of ripe red fruits tantalise on the nose followed by dark blackberries and plums on the palate. The finish is satisfying with a hint of dried herbs and spice.
La Chartreuse de Prieuré Marquet 2015 (Bordeaux, France) Bordeaux Superieur is an appellation that was introduced in the region to account for those wines that were slightly more “superior” than the generic Bordeaux AOC wines. They must be produced from the classic Bordeaux grapes; Merlot, Cab Sauv, Cab Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and in the rarer cases Carménère as well. Château Prieuré Marquet’s 2015 is well balanced with soft tannins, and filled with dark fruit, a hint of vanilla and leather. Decant and drink now!
Rock Wines Smart As Nero d’Avola Merlot 2019 (Sicily, France) Nero d'Avola translates as "Black of Avola", referring to the small, dark skinned grapes that flourish in Sicily's hot Mediterranean climate. The addition of Merlot has softened the blend, making it more approachable in its youth, a genius move by the winemakers. Try it with a hearty stew this coming winter, you won't be disappointed.
Van Loveren Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2018 (South Africa) A powerful blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. The wine gained elegant Christmas pudding and tobacco notes from 8 months maturation with 100% French Oak staves. Beautiful aromas of Cigar box, dark chocolate, eucalyptus and mint, together with the smoothness of the Merlot ensure a complex full- bodied red wine.
