An easy Chianti straight out of Tuscany, this one’s an interesting blend of mostly Sangiovese with a hint of Canaiolo, a black skinned Tuscan grape traditional of the region. The blend of the two produces a wine that’s soft and savoury with easy acidity alongside typical cherry, blackberry and

savoury herbs rounding out the palate. Serve with a hard cheese or any charcuterie and you’ll be good to go!

Good Chianti under $20 a bottle? You betcha!

This wine is incredible value for money ($15) for a cheeky little Italian red which puts its fruity foot forward
... medium body and lovely spicy, savoury complexity too.

For great value European imports, it’s hard to match the quality of the wines that Stephen Bennett MW brings into New Zealand. It’s a combination of a discerning palate as well as good contacts around the world. Although Stephen probably has the name for Spanish wines, his Italians are practically as good. Here, I review the Castellani Chianti DOCG 2016. Dark ruby-red colour with some depth, a little lighter on the rim with garnet hues. The nose is elegantly concentrated with good depth of savoury red cherry fruit along with subtle notes of dried herbs unfolding classical bitter cherry elements. This grows in density with aeration. Medium-bodied, the palate has savoury red cherry and berry fruit flavours melded with dried herb notes. The fruit is sweet with some lusciousness and is balanced by grainy tannin extraction and grip and fresh acidity lending the palate good energy. The flavours carry to a lingering sweet and savoury finish. This is a Chianti with classical savoury red cherry and berry fruit flavours along with lush dried herb notes on a grainy palate with some acid liveliness, Match with roasted red meats and casseroles over the next 3+ years. A blend of Sangiovese and Canaiolo fermented to 12.0% alc. 17.0+/20 Jan 2019.
