Casa Vinicola Carpineto has estates throughout Tuscany, and was initially founded with the aim of producing the highest quality Chianti Classico. As Chianti became known more as a bulk wine in the late 20th century, the winemakers turned their focus to other regions in Tuscany, including Montepulciano – known for Sangiovese. To be known as a Vino Nobile de Montepulciano, the grapes have to come from the hills surrounding the town, the grapes for this wine come from two small single vineyards. They are first fermented in cement and then placed in a mixture of French and American oak to age for 12 months. The wine is bottled unfiltered and then left to rest for nearly 4 years in the cellars. It’s evolved so well in the bottle and will perfect to drink now, let it breathe for ½ an hour or so in some big, deep glasses or a decanter and enjoy!
This wine, of great structure and concentration, is designed to reward extensive cellaring. 100% Sangiovese, the grapes for this wine come from the 1.33 hectare (3.20 acres) Poggio Sant’ Enrico Piccolo and the 3.65 hectare (8.76 acres) Poggio Sant’ Enrico Grande vineyards. These are situated between 300 and 350 meters (~1,000ft) in elevation just outside the town of Montepulciano (Siena). After small lot fermentation in cement vats, the wine is placed in new American and French oak barrels, for a period of 12 months. Following this, the unfiltered wine is bottled and stored in temperature controlled cellars for approximately 45 months before release.
