Opaque black dark red colour with deep dark red hue. The nose displays liquorice top notes followed by some dark plum and black cherry with a hint of cedar as an end note. Full bodied the palate delivers rich mouth filling flavours of dark plum, liquorice and dark cherry with some spice on the back palate. Quite opulent in texture and very concentrated with fine grained tannins. Excellent depth with long aftertaste of spicy dark cherry, plum and liquorice.
The 2009 Mr. Riggs 'Yacca Paddock' Tempranillo was fermented in a 5 tonne open fermenter, resting on skins for 7 days, followed by membrane bag pressing. Fermentation was completed in 33% new French oak with the balance 2 year old French oak. Post malo, the wine was left on its gross lees for a couple of months to add texture and creaminess to the palate.
"Full, even, dark ruby-red colour with purple hues. The bouquet is aromatic and lifted with dark red berry and floral notes alongside savoury earth and mineral elements. Full-bodied, bright red berry fruit flavours with red florals, liquorice and plums form a core, with savoury earth, herb, spice and undergrowth elements present. The alcohol warmth and power is noticeable, adding to the volume and palate presence. This is well-structured with robust tannins and mouthfeel, the acidity in the background. The flavours, grip and alcohol make this an up-front wine, leaving a moderately sustained finish. Serve with slow-cooked meats over the next 5-6+ years".
4 STARS - Raymond Chan Wine Reviews
“This is sumptuous and comforting yet classically framed with fine, firm tannins. The bouquet is beautifully ripe and lifted showing dark plum, game, floral and subtle nutty characters. It's concentrated and richly textured with stunning fruit intensity, finishing sturdy and long. A very impressive Tempranillo. At its best: now to 2020.”

Vineyard Yacca Paddock vineyard, owned by international film makers, Scott Hicks and Kerry Heysen-Hicks, is situated at Kuitpo in the south west escarpment of the Mount Lofty Ranges. Planted in 2000, vines are east facing with site temperatures some 2.5 degrees cooler on average than McLaren Vale which, as a crow flies, is just 5km away.
Vines are on old podsolic soils over an ironstone/gravel base and planted to a reasonably high density on a single cordon. With elevation of 350-375 metres above sea level, and an annual rainfall in the vicinity of 825mm, Yacca Paddock qualifies as a premium cool climate Adelaide Hills vineyard.
Yacca Paddock’s elevated position overlooking the Gulf of St Vincent offers consistent cooling breezes, ensures healthy canopies and allows the vines to avoid the extremes of summer temperature and develop complex varietal characters.
