Details

Church Road Gwen Pinot Gris 2020 is a tribute to the wife of pioneering winemaker Tom McDonald, named in honour of Florence Gwendolen (Gwen) Brown. This wine was crafted to explore a more elegant, refined and feminine style of winemaking, and it does not disappoint.

The grapes were grown on the Matapiro Vineyard, located in the Crownthorpe Terraces sub-region of Hawke's Bay. The vineyard's elevated and inland location, with low nutrient, free-draining soils, allows for a balanced, evenly spaced, and well-exposed crop. The warm and dry settled weather during the growing season and harvest period, along with careful vineyard management, contributed to the exceptional quality of the grapes.

The fruit was hand-harvested, sorted, and gently whole-bunch pressed to preserve the delicate juice structure. The wine was made in a dry, elegant, and moderate alcohol style, with no juice settling or clarification. The natural, wild fermentation and aging on the yeast lees for 12 months prior to bottling have added a subtle creaminess to the palate, along with a sense of mineral or hot stone complexity.

On the nose, the wine exhibits ripe autumn orchard fruit aromas, lifted by notes of honeysuckle and subtle mineral complexity. On the palate, it is a dry, fresh, and slightly steely Pinot Gris, with exceptional length and finesse. While beautiful drinking now, this wine can be cellared for at least four years from the vintage date. It is the perfect match for fresh salads, seafood, poultry, and cold cuts.

Experience the elegance and femininity of Church Road Gwen Pinot Gris 2020 and discover why it is a must-try for any wine enthusiast.
